Now that Google is practically forcing us all to use automation, marketers need to understand how to make the automation work for them. Blindly doing whatever Google recommendation is a guaranteed path to spending a lot of money fast with no guarantee on results. As marketers, we need to learn how the automation works and adjust the settings to best suit our needs. Here’s what I’ve learned about Google Ads automation in 2023 and how I use it to manage campaigns:

  1. Understand the mechanics of how the automation systems work so the campaign changes you make help to improve performance. 
  2. Do not over-segment. The more data you can provide the system, the faster it can optimize. By creating tons of ad groups within tons of campaigns, the data is all being split and it will take longer for each segment to optimize. 
  3. Patience! Know when to be actively making changes and when to just let the campaigns go. Many times, the best way to see success is to be hands off for weeks at a time to let the system learn and optimize without your intervention.  
  4. Do not auto-apply!
